The 2005 Rating issues & Thirsk Industrial Park Business Forum

Following on from the report in May, correspondence has been received from HDC which states that the Council have decided that, due to the lack of response from companies within the Park, to place the formation of a Forum on hold.

The initial response saw some 16% attendance, whilst the second attempt only realised 18%. The Association still welcomes any business to become a member as we can provide them with good representation, networking and any other assistance.

Remember to check your rating assessment and use the guide which was provided in the May issue.

Our aims and Objectives for the future

  • Drive the economy of Thirsk and its surrounding Districts
  • Lobby on behalf of the Business Community
  • Keep members informed of significant local issues
  • Informing members of local business initiatives and grants
  • Provide a forum to develop local business policies
  • Hold regular events with keynote speakers
  • Liaise with Police and other service providers to inform them of business needs
  • Support local events

Business Directory for the District

We have been in contact with Community Publications Ltd (On your Doorstep) who are producing the Directory for an update. They are now collating all the entries into categories and the proof reading will be ready soon.

The circulation remains at14,777 postal addresses in the YO7 and YO61 districts, so all of the householders will receive a copy.

The Directories will be distributed by Royal Mail, with the exception of one area, which will be covered by other means, to ensure total coverage.

We also intend to run some type of competitions in the Directory to keep you on your toes!! We have requested, on several occasions for information of shows, events, etc. for inclusion. The response has been very poor considering the publicity is free..

This is a fantastic opportunity to promote the businesses, events and organisations to the full. The deadline for entries is now past, so any business wishing to advertise will have to wait until next year..

You can still E-mail future details to: thirsk.bus@ntlworld.com

Chamber members are entitled to greater promotion in the publication so don’t delay. We all know what it costs to be in the National Directories, this is a chance to prove that a local approach works and benefits the businesses and the community which we all belong.

Look out for the upcoming request form to get your chance……….

Moving on

Our Treasurer, Susan Bowes, who is Manager of HSBC Bank, Thirsk branch, is leaving next month for a new post. Susan has done an excellent job as Treasurer and greatly assisted the Association in producing the new Standing order forms. We wish her well in her new position. Our reporter, Carolyn Thorpe, has retired from the Darlington & Stockton Times, after 25 years in journalism. Carolyn has attended our meetings on a regular basis and again, we wish her well in retirement. Ian Noble is our new reporter.

Our Rural Networking advisor, Kathryn Chapman, is leaving this month , as funding for further projects has ceased.

Kathryn has been a tremendous asset to the Association and has “burnt the midnight oils” in producing data for the launch and directory. She has worked tirelessly on our behalf and we wish her well and hope that we remain in contact.

Encouraging enterprise in our district Highlights from June assembly Due to the lack of attendee’s, which was probably the result of our Mail system, a formal meeting was not held.

We had a Police presence and were informed that as from April 1st 05, there would be a team of 3 Police officers for the area.

Their intention is to reduce Anti-social behaviour, wanton damage and under-age drinking. The shopwatch scheme was reported to be working well.

Chris Snowden of Newsquest has still not received details of businesses who have paid for a web page/listing despite having been contacted by Newsquest and by letter from the Association. We can only reiterate that it is up to you to make this contact, as you are losing out on advertising.

The Finkle Street/Market Place road works are now scheduled to commence early September 05. This should see us through the Tourist/visitor season. We also have requested that these works do not start until after the September race fixture to maximise on the influx of racegoing traffick.

It is still imperative for any business which feels that they will suffer financially through lower trade levels, to keep accurate records of turnover to be used as a comparison with the previous year.

This is the only way in which we can support you in the event of a claim.!

Finally, if you have subscribed for a Web-site insertion, please check the Web-site on www.thirsk-northyorkshire.co.uk You should contact Newsquest directly on 01325-505324 and speak to Chris Snowdon.

Value for Money

Please remember that the fees are currently £40 per year, payable by either a “one-off” sum or by quarterly Standing Order.

Listing on the Web-site costs £25 per year, paid to Newsquest.

The next Standing Order forms wil be sent out in April 2006, and payments will be due in June 2006

Earlier than this, we will be sending out forms for the 2006 directory so that any update of information can be made,

  • The fee includes: Affiliation with York & North Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce
  • Quarterly Newsletter and Email Bulletins
  • Regular Events
  • Indirect Support to your business through local agencies
  • Representation on key commercial issues
  • Training Events and opportunities for local businesses
  • Business to Business Opportunities
  • Member offers
Plus all the other stated objectives!

A further £25.00 will get your business an enhanced listing and hyperlink on the Thirsk Web site.

Fees can be paid by a quarterly Standing Order. This still gives excellent value for money, with all the benefits which we provide. We can also promote your event through the Thirsk Website as part of the service.

Events for 2005

Ideal Home & Garden Show August 28/29th

Craft Fair November

Dinner Dance November

Painting Competition December

More details will follow nearer to the events

Jill will be reporting on the Barbeque at the July meeting. The Ladies Section organises and put on all of these events on a voluntary basis and does a tremendous job.

The Proceeds mainly go towards the Town Xmas lights to make the display more attractive each year. This costs an appreciable sum of money and effort. Our public Liability insurance alone costs over £800 per year. And advertising costs escalate each year.

The ladies are always open to more assistance, as it is mainly up to the same ladies each year and maybe some energetic males could find time to assist in setting up some of the fixtures!!

So if you can spare some time to participate you would be welcomed, call Jill Miller on 01845-525112/ 522333

Jill and the Ladies group do a tremendous amount of voluntary work on behalf of the Association, also they hold monthly dinner meetings at various venues. Any Lady wishing to join in would be most welcome. Contact Jill Miller on 01845-535112/522333
